About Higgins
Higgins is a lively and diverse electorate in the inner south-east of Melbourne with around 90,000 residents and covering an area of approximately 39 square kilometres. Its main suburbs include Armadale, Ashburton, Kooyong, Malvern, Malvern East, Prahran and Toorak along with parts of Camberwell, Carnegie, Glen Iris, Hughesdale, Murrumbeena, South Yarra and Windsor.
Higgins is mainly residential, but it is also home to Chadstone, the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere; Chapel St, the iconic retail and entertainment mecca; and the historic Stonington Mansion and Como House.
The electorate was named after Henry Higgins (1851-1929), a highly influential former Member of Parliament and Justice of the High Court.
Since the electorate was created in 1949, Higgins has had a proud and distinguished history of fine representation, including former Australian Prime Ministers Harold Holt and Sir John Gorton, and former Australian Treasurer Peter Costello.
