The Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP, Federal Member for Higgins, is working with the local Ashburton community to find ways to reduce the threat of crime and anti-social behaviour.
Ms O’Dwyer said, “Over a number of years I have had conversations with the Ashburton Traders’ Association regarding community safety along the High Street shopping strip and in the surrounding area. Traders have highlighted to me that they want the area to be safe for their customers, as well as being able to keep their property secure.
“Responses to my community survey, as well as discussions with local traders, clearly identify community safety as one of the top issues in Ashburton. Time and time again when residents complete my community survey they rate community safety as a local issue that’s important to them. In the last twelve months community safety has ranked as the top issue in the area surrounding the Ashburton shops.
“Ashburton is lucky to have such a vibrant and family-friendly shopping strip. We need to make sure we continue to provide a safe environment for shoppers and small businesses that are a big part of our local life.”
Ms O’Dwyer’s continued discussions with the Ashburton Traders’ Association follow the delivery of more than $100,000 of Federal Government funding to help install CCTV cameras in Prahran, South Yarra and Windsor, a 2013 election commitment in response to community concerns.
“I encourage any local residents, shoppers and business owners to get in touch with me if they have any concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour. My community survey is available on my website -kellyodwyer.com.au,” Ms O’Dwyer concluded.
