Local schools have been included in a leaked ‘hit list’ of over 3,200 schools that will lose funding as a result of the Gillard government’s plans to change school funding, says Kelly O’Dwyer MP, Federal Member for Higgins.
Schools named in the leaked hit list include De La Salle College, Loreto Mandeville Hall, Our Lady of Lourdes School, Presentation College, Sacre Coeur, St Cecilia’s Parish School, St Kevin’s College and St Roch’s Parish School.
Kelly said, “Many of these schools are low fee schools and cannot afford to have their funding cut. Any reduction in funding would result in increased fees.
“One third of all schools across Australia are on this hit list. If you can’t trust the Federal government to properly administer the school halls programme – how can you trust them to radically redesign education funding for Australia’s 9,500 schools?
“Julia Gillard says she has no plans to cut funding – just like she said she had no plans to challenge Kevin Rudd, no plans to alter the private health insurance rebate and no plan to introduce the world’s biggest carbon tax. Australian’s don’t trust Julia Gillard and her promises anymore.
“Labor has been trumpeting the Gonski Review and its call for $5 billion in extra funding despite the fact that the Gillard Government only committed $5 million in the last budget and is yet to explain where the additional billions will come from?
“After five years of talk and two years to conclude the Gonski review, the government still cannot give schools a clear picture of their funding post 2013.
“Schools, like all other enterprises, need funding certainty so that they can set fees and plan for the future.”
Kelly has spoken on this issue a number of times in the Parliament and transcripts can be found at www.kellyodwyer.com.au
